I am quickly realizing that the subway is going to be my main location for blog writing. I can't focus enough to read, but all the different walks of life (on this one train cart that, for the most part is silent because no one really knows the person they are tapping shoulders with) creates a good pallet & strong inspiration for writing.
Over the past month my eyes have seen some outrageous sights on the MTA! Yesterday, the number one slot in "rad entertainment on the subway" was stolen from the dance breakers (yes, break dancing in the train... very close quarters... some people weren't as thrilled as I was). Anyway, the number one slot was swept up by a trio of conga players (this is not the greatest clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXkHV2BWnzI). SIDE NOTE: you should watch other videos of MTA entertainment. Very silly! They "weren't trying to disturb anyone, just wanted to bring some joy to everyone's ride." I was sitting in my seat with the biggest smile on my face.
I can't say that I've heard the word joy used all that much up here. Not to say that people are lacking joy, but it's shown slightly different in NY. You might even have to do a little digging to find it, but when you do, boy oh boy is it genuine. When people say "New Yorkers are mean!" don't get me wrong I agree a little bit, but in the south it's the same... people just aren't saying it to your face. All this to say, I'm starting to admire the honesty and confidence of the Yankee folk. Now all I have to do is spread the ideas of smiling when commuting and taking one more second to hold the door for the person behind you (just a little southern charm)! The north and south could really have a lovely relationship if they would live and learn a little from the other. You could definitely call me a student still. Living, learning, observing & dreaming big.
Lots of joy!
